Man Hacks Mother to Death, Surrenders to Police in Cox’s Bazar

A 28-year-old man in Cox’s Bazar has surrendered to the police after allegedly hacking his mother to death over a dispute about money.

The incident took place at 2:30 AM on Saturday in Barua Para, Ward No. 6 of the Cox’s Bazar municipality, according to Ilias Khan, Officer-in-Charge of Cox’s Bazar Sadar Police Station.

The victim, identified as 55-year-old Anowara Begum, was the wife of Niaz Ahmed. The suspect, Mohammad Abid, is their son.

According to locals, Abid’s father, Niaz Ahmed, recently sold a piece of land and used the proceeds for his wife’s medical treatment in Chattogram. Anowara had returned to Cox’s Bazar on Friday night. That same evening, Abid reportedly asked his mother for money, which she refused to give, leading to an argument.

“After dinner, they both went to sleep. Late at night, Abid allegedly killed his mother by hacking her with a sharp knife,” said OC Ilias.

Following the incident, Abid locked the bedroom door from the outside and turned himself in at the local police station, informing officers about the murder.

A police team visited the scene the next morning and found the bedroom locked. Upon opening the door, they recovered Anowara’s body lying on the bed with injuries to her face, hands, and head, consistent with a sharp weapon. A knife was found near the body.

The body has been sent to Cox’s Bazar District Sadar Hospital for an autopsy.

“Initial investigations suggest that Abid killed his mother after she refused to give him money to buy drugs,” said OC Ilias. “However, further investigation is ongoing to confirm the exact motive.”
